“House is Not A Home” –
Cross-Discipline

Layering visual, aural, and kinesthetic texture and form, House-is-Not-A-Home is a cross-disciplinary social justice project combining experimental moving image, live dance performance with live projection. This work illuminates the disjuncture between a house and a home — the first, a trope of confinement–abuse, the second – love, protection and nurture.

Repetitive motifs of a rotating square house form, flying birds, dramatic light and color on the bodies of dancers within the moving image, and on the live dance movements on the floor, create and clash the house/home contraries.

The dancers for this piece are Audrey Baran and Dr. Kaustavi Sarkar.

Audrey Baran, MFA + RYT-500, is a Charlotte based dance artist and a Visiting Assistant Professor in Dance at UNC Charlotte. She is the founder/artistic director of the nonprofit contemporary dance company, Baran Dance.

Dr. Kaustavi Sarkar, a dancer-choreographer, educator, and scholar in the Odissi, an Indian classical dance tradition form from eastern India, is an associate professor of dance at UNCC and the artistic Director of Kaustavi Movement Center, an India-based organization dedicated to Indian classical dance.

BIO

A multidisciplinary feminist artist, Indrani Nayar-Gall weaves global narratives of marginalization, patriarchy, and misogyny through her practice in installation, 2-D/3-D media, documentary and experimental moving images. Her non-conformist de-colonized artivism that springs from being surrounded by women-made cultural/ritual mark-making, are evocations of women’s bodies as sites of violence, dreams and aspirations helping marginalized women survivors.

Social justice themes stem from influences in her mixed north-south Indian background, using or combining paper, fiber, ready-made, words/text from scriptures derogatory to women and she stretches the limits of conventional processes to create bodies that physically hang, stretch over the floor or wall, or create non-linear digital moving image narratives.
