Take a peek on the inside of Charlotte’s Detention Centers and the life of the individuals in incarceration. Local poets in Charlotte took poems created by residents of the Charlotte Meck Detention Facility through a poetry program with Guerilla Poets and turned them into spoken word poetry videos and performances so we may bring the residents’ stories to the public. The audience will have a chance to respond to the poems showcased through writing and we will take the letters back to the residents to show support.
Guerilla Poets are a nonprofit art collective providing poetry, art and music workshops and performances in underserved areas based in personal development. What you are about to see are poems that were written by residents at the Charlotte Detention Facility. Local poets took these poems and created videos of the residents’ work so that we may bring them to you. We ask that you write a response to the residents before you leave today so that we can take your responses back to the Detention Facility to share with the residents there.
