Channing Dayton and Dancers, “Color Theory”

BOOM Performance:

Channing Dayton and Dancers –
“Color Theory:” Dance, Interactive, Visual Art, Experiential

“Color Theory” invites audiences into a vivid, collaborative dance work that explores how our paths intertwine in both seen and unseen ways, and whether this is through fate or happenstance. Created in partnership with the artists, each showing unfolds differently, shaped by the voices and choices of the artists in the room, as well as time itself.

Drawing inspiration from visual art and textiles, the piece weaves a literal and metaphorical “common thread” that highlights the unexpected connections between people. This immersive work offers an ever-evolving experience that asks audiences to consider how their own colors, or experiences, blend and morph into the world around them. Audiences will leave with something to take home, an artifact of the experience and a new perspective, both tangible and felt in a deep manner.

BIO

I am a dancer and choreographer rooted in a contemporary process that is collaborative in nature, aiming to raise understanding and awareness of “taboo” or “controversial” topics, because of my belief that education is vital to cultivating a safe and socially aware society. I create work with my dancers and truly feed off who is in the room, in addition to having inspiration from other art mediums, such as photography, videography, painting, etc.

My cast of dancers are vital to my process, and I treat the process and cast as a living ecosystem, where each work is unique to the individuals in the room, and could not be “copy and pasted” onto another group of dancers. I started creating work with this philosophy in college, and am currently involved in the Jacobs Pillow Curriculum in Motion Institute cohort, where I am exploring my artistic and choreographic practice through the lens of community involvement.
