BOOM @ Birdsong Series: Ayanna Florence, D. Jones the General, and Jordan Bailey

For the final show in the BOOM at Birdsong Series get a double feature of poetry along with the music and vendors. Birdsong Brewing Co. (1016 North Davidson St.) will serve as a space for the performing arts to be enjoyed on Wednesday, June 14 from 6:30 – 8:45pm.

First experience poet Ayanna Florence. She will be putting on a one-woman spoken word show that investigates the black woman’s experience with emotional vulnerability and its impact on self and the world.

Then hear the musical stylings of D. Jones the General. He takes you on a Hip Hop journey spitting rhymes that speak to the shared struggles and triumphs of people from all corners of the world, connecting through the universal language of music.

Then round out the evening with more poetry from Jordan Bailey. He uses spoken word and Hip Hop to detail the plight of black folk in America. He will use sampled music as a framework for storytelling and diving into the sound of the times reflected in black youth.

Ayanna Florence

About Ayanna Florence Ayanna Florence is a poet, creative, and teaching artist originally from Chesapeake, VA and currently residing in Charlotte, NC. She is a Brave New Voices alum, a Southern Fried Poetry Slam finalist, and has been performing spoken word across the country since 16 years old. Ayanna is the 2023 Slam Charlotte Grand Slam champion, the current North Carolina Regional Slam champion, a 2023 Queen of the South slam champion, and the 2023 Women of the World Poetry Slam champion.

As a queer black woman, Ayanna exists on the fringes and outside the box, and her artistry reflects this reality. She believes that living outside of the margins is an inherently revolutionary act that gives her a unique perspective on life and the human experience. Ayanna prides herself in creating work that is thought-provoking, emotion-evoking, and fearless. In both performance and prose, her artistry is raw, powerful, and addresses themes such as mental health, black family dynamics, and the queer black femme experience. She is passionate about using her poetry as a method of healing for herself and others.


D Jones The General

About D Jones The General : D. Jones The General aka “International Jones” is a veteran artist from Charlotte, NC. Following years of studying international rhythm and taking time to figure out the business, he stood his ground to create the perfect package and is now independently releasing his new music this year as a long-awaited reintroduction.


Jordan Bailey

About Jordon Bailey : Jordan Bailey is a 25 year old artist out of Charlotte NC. His journey as an artist began in the poetry scene at the age of 15, as poet in Breathe Ink. He slowly climbed the ranks and has racked up several accolades such as 2018 National Slam Champions and 2019 Slam Madness Champion. In 2018 he transitioned into coaching and becoming a teaching artist for the same organization that has taught him. In January of 2021 he dropped his 1st project Catfish Voodoo under his new moniker, Young Static. Jordan hopes to continue to grow the arts scene in North Carolina.
