BOOM Performance:
“What Future is it Now?”

Our wider culture is obsessed with images of the future as a radical break from the present– either a wonderland of technological progress and space travel or an apocalyptic wasteland. Or maybe an instagrammable cyberland. Meanwhile, our personal lives are filled with anxiety about our near future as fortunes are made and lost in a shifting political climate.

The idea of the American Dream as a future in which everyone’s children lead a better life is being met with cynicism by a country finding that not to be true. This show is a quirky comedic exploration of a variety of visions of the futures that we are likely or unlikely to actually face. We ask questions about cultural narratives that insist that the future will feature a radical and sudden break with the present rather than a continuation of the present featuring both fear and hope. We challenge the idea that there will ever be a time when society will consider the future as having already arrived. We also ask questions about performance and the space/time continuum by having elements of the performance take place outside the theater throughout the weekend and projected into the show at the time of the performance.

This new work uses dance, comedy, film and lots of props to ask questions about our cultural metanarratives the future. “What Future is it Now?” explores various images of the future using a reality show reunion special to tie it all together. This show will make you laugh and encourage you to question what exactly you’re doing with your life. Look for our VR obsessed stars out in Plaza Midwood during the weekend of BOOM.
