A Call to Create

Seeking artistic responses to the current state of affairs

BOOM Charlotte in partnership with BLKMRKTCLT, Charlotte is Creative and The Roll Up CLT invites you to respond to the current state of affairs with your art.

The environment for Black people in the United States has been at a state of tension throughout the nation’s history. In more recent times, video documentation of Black people losing their lives after encounters with those assigned to protect and serve have brought those tensions to a boiling point. The tension has overflowed into the streets all across the nation, and even far away overseas. The Black community and their allies are now coming together to make their voices heard against the status quo.

The conversation starters and thought provokers not only lead demonstrations, they also move masses, provoke/inspire reflection and action through their performances. They put brushes to canvas to share different perspectives. They immortalize monumental moments with their camera shutters. They use art to give voice to the unseen and the unheard.

BOOM Charlotte is primarily a very diverse grassroots collective of artists and other creative professionals who come together to collaborate and create something bigger than themselves. We are not an activist/political organization, but once again we are finding ourselves in a situation where one cannot remain silent, neutral or inactive; when one loses the privilege of turning away from what is happening to one’s fellow being, and seeking refuge in one’s art. It is a time to let art speak, to provide the insight, empathy and hope that only art can provide. When the humanity of one is questioned, the idea of humanity itself comes into question.

BOOM is partnering with BLKMRKTCLT, Charlotte is Creative and The Roll Up CLT asking the arts community to come together online to share work that addresses what is happening in our community and in the country. We want to hear from all of you.
